Starting July 2025, foreigners living in Vietnam will be able to register for VNeID, Vietnam’s official digital identification system – and it’s a big deal.

VNeID is more than just a digital ID. It’s a government-backed “super app” that’s quickly becoming an essential tool for everyday life in Vietnam – from accessing public services to managing daily tasks like opening a bank account or even buying medicine.

What Is VNeID?

VNeID stands for Vietnam Electronic Identification. It’s developed by the National Population Data Center under the Ministry of Public Security and serves as a digital ID platform for individuals and organizations.

Built on a national database of identity, population, and authentication, VNeID allows users to store and present a range of electronic documents including:

Citizen/foreigner ID cards

Driver’s licenses

Vehicle registration

Health insurance

Passports

Birth and marriage certificates

Social insurance documents

These can be used for digital verification instead of carrying physical copies.

Who Can Use It?

Until now, only Vietnamese citizens and registered organizations could use VNeID. But starting July 1, 2025, the platform will officially open up for foreigners residing in Vietnam. This includes expats, long-term residents, and foreigners working or studying in the country.

What Can You Do with VNeID?

Government and Admin Services

Apply for or manage residence permits

Request criminal records online (cutting wait time from 15 days to just 3–9 days)

Register temporary or permanent residency

Pay traffic fines and manage driving records

Financial Services

Open bank accounts using biometric verification

Connect with 13 major banks, e-wallets, and digital certificate services

Access tax applications and digital citizen services in major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Healthcare and Everyday Use

Buy prescription medicine online (e.g., from FPT Long Chau pharmacy)

Store and use health insurance or electronic health records

Use for travel – book flights, check in online with airlines integrated into the system

Social Integration

Digital integration of marriage status, social benefits, and pensions

Access to national education and training platforms

Services for Party members, including digital tools for Party Congress management

Is It Safe?

Yes. Data privacy and security are top priorities for the developers.

You control what information is integrated and shared. Any request for your personal data – like from a bank – requires your explicit consent via the app.

The system is built with five layers of protection: legal, data, security, infrastructure, and human resources.

VNeID continues to evolve with plans to integrate even more services, including:

Utility payments (electricity, water)

E-wallets and cashless payments

Social support programs (pensions, unemployment, disaster relief)
